CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

Jane Clark

On a homestead near a small town outside of Marquette—Michigan’s upper peninsula

Jane wandered around inside the old cow barn, moving things with her toes and poking at shadowy corners with a long stick, looking for anything that might be useful during the house rebuild and generally getting her bearings on the homestead after all the changes since she’d been there when tires crunched on the driveway, alerting her that the pickup had pulled into the driveway. She peeked out the barn door to make sure it really was Mike and Delia before emerging all the way, then waited for them to reach her before they all walked toward the big barn.

Jane regarded them. “How did it go?”

“Fine. We didn’t find any surprise animals this time, unfortunately.” Mike’s voice rumbled from behind his mask. “But we got the generator going, and the freezer is up and running, cooling down for us.”

“That’s great news. Delia, how did it feel being over there?”

She shrugged. “Not great, but I’m okay.”

“More good news.” Jane beamed at her as they stepped up to the barn door.

Inside, Bea was resting while Bax played with Storm. Merry whinnied when they entered, and Delia went over to pet the horse after removing the top half of her gear.

“It’s okay, girl. I know, you must be dying to go out and run.”

“I’ve been thinking about that.” Bea’s voice from her spot on the straw was sleepy. “I never learned to trim hooves or put on horseshoes. Dad, do you know how?”

He shook his head. “Dr. Simon always came out and did that for me. Floated teeth too.”

“Oh, right, the teeth. I never thought of that. I’m sure I can do it, but I’ll need some kind of guide. Maybe there’s a book in Dr. Simon’s office or something. We’ll have to look for it and keep an eye on Berto and the horses’ feet and mouths.”

Jane cut in. “Speaking of looking for something at the vet clinic, now that we’ve got a freezer cooling down for the meat, we should get to town, or some of us should.”

“Did I tell you that Lloyd and Sarah made it through?” Bea said. “They were at the meeting the other day, and it was nice to see them.”

“Oh, that’s so good to hear.” Jane clasped her hands together. “I thought most of our friends would be gone.”

“Most of them are, honey, but old Lloyd’s too stubborn to be one of them.” Mike winked and ran a hand through his hair, pausing to rub his scalp in several places.

Jane could relate—she was ready for a shower and being out of the mask and hood for a bit felt good. “I guess we’re too stubborn too.”

“Sarah will be really glad to see you both—she asked about you when I saw her, and I told her you were heading home, but we weren’t sure when you’d get here. When you go to town, maybe you can run out to their place for a few minutes and let them know you made it.
